Top Ten Tuesday is an original
feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish, where the writers, like me, are particularly fond of lists.
This week's topic is...top 10 most memorable secondary characters. For the purposes of this top 10, I'm going to take secondary to mean anyone who wasn't the protagonist, regardless of how big their role was.
1. Ron Weasley - the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling
Ron was everything a best friend and sidekick should be, and I loved every glimpse we got of him and his life.
2. Hermione Granger - the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling
As above, Hermione was a great secondary character. Without both her and Ron, the Harry Potter books, and Harry himself, would not have been as brilliant as they were.
3. James - All Our Yesterdays by Cristin Terrill
A really intriguing secondary character, I wanted to know a lot more about James.
4. Mr Peterson - The Universe Versus Alex Woods by Gavin Extence
I'm not actually finished with this book yet, but I love Mr Peterson for his wit and his acceptance of Alex.
5. Isabel - The Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy by Maggie Stiefvater
I loved Isabel so much, and really, really wanted to see more about her life. I thought her story was as powerful as the protagonist's, a sign of a really good secondary character.
6. Gus - The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
Oh Gus. What is there to say? A wonderful secondary character who we fall in love with as Hazel does.
7. Lula - The Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich
I recently reviewed Notorious Nineteen and said the series wasn't as good as it was when it first started. Lula, however, is still as hilarious as she was in the first book, maybe even more so. She's everything a sidekick shouldn't be, but it works.
8. Jasper Cullen - The Twilight Saga by Stephanie Meyer
Edward and Bella - *yawn*. Jasper, on the other hand, was a fascinating character and I wish we'd spent more time with him.
9. Gilbert Blythe - Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery
I loved Gilbert, and his and Anne's relationship was easily the most fascinating of the book for me when I was younger.
10. Justin - Dance of Shadows by Yelena Black
Justin is a character we don't know a whole lot about, but what I saw of him I really liked. I assume he will play a bigger part in the sequel.
Who are your favourite secondary characters?
Great list! A character from HP also made my list this week but Ron and Hermione were definitely great secondary characters :)
ReplyDeleteMy TTT
To be honest, my entire top ten could have been characters from Harry Potter.

Totally agree with the Jasper comment!
ReplyDeleteHaha. He was so much more interesting than moody Edward!

Great list, I love Isabel, Gus, Hermione and Ron as well although I weirdly don't consider any of them secondary characters. In Harry Potter while it's clearly his story I still consider Ron and Hermione main characters just not the lead character I feel like all three are main characters. With The Fault in our Stars I feel like the story is Hazel and Augustus therefore I consider them both main characters and I decided any character that gets point of view chapters are main characters so that's why Isabel is out of the running for my list.
ReplyDeleteI can see where you're coming from, especially with Harry Potter, which is an ensemble piece. However, since it's called Harry Potter I decided to take liberties for the purposes of this survey!

I love Isobel!
ReplyDeleteIt makes me sad that Stephanie Meyers secondary characters were all so interesting, but she chose two write a book about the most boring vampire and teenage girl to ever have existed. It shows that she is actually creative, but lacking in skill, which is depressing. I totally agree that Jasper is 100% the best SMeyer vamp, but I really did like all of them aside from Edward.

Yes, the more I look back on Twilight the more puzzled I am. However, I take comfort that Meyers learnt something, because The Host is a much better novel.

I included both Ron and Hermione on my TTT list as well. I actually combined them into one because they both help Harry in his adventures. Also, I agree with your comment that Jasper is a very interesting character in the Twilight series, and I would like to know more about him. He actually has a background story, unlike Edward, who has been searching for love his entire life. Boooring! Overall, great TTT list!
ReplyDeleteCheck out my TTT list: http://booksavvyblog.blogspot.com/
I put Ron and Hermione separately because I was having trouble getting to 10! Now that I've seen other people's lists I realise I've forgotten loads of great secondary characters.
DeleteSarah
Def agree, HP has so many awesome characters that stick with you
ReplyDeleteI know, I think I could do a whole top 10 of characters from the series.
DeleteSarah
I love Ron and Hermione but I thought them main characters since they're always there with Harry anyway, so I didn't pick them. I could fill like 3 or more TTTs with HP characters alone! :)
ReplyDeleteNice list.
I do agree, but I decided to go for everyone but the protagonist as my definition of a secondary character!
DeleteAnd yes, I could fill lots of prompts with Harry Potter characters too.
Sarah
Oh wow, I didn't think about using Justin from Dance of Shadows. What a great choice! :-)
ReplyDeleteI had a really hard time this week and didn't think of loads I should have. Thank goodness I remembered Justin.
DeleteSarah
I *almost* put Gilbert on my list, too, but then I realized I only really remember him from the movie, not the books. I need to re-read all the Anne books so I can fall in love with the book Gilbert all over again!
ReplyDeleteI saw Diana on someone else's list and realised I probably should have put her down, but I did love Gilbert. Doing this list has made me want to reread the first book!
DeleteSarah
Ron and Hermione yes! Though I think of both as more of main characters, but I guess they're really not. I totally should have put Cole St. Claire from The Wolves of Mercy Falls on my list! LOVED him! Isabel's a great pick though!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my TTT earlier!
Sandy @ Somewhere Only We Know
I think Ron and Hermione are main characters, but the books are called Harry Potter so I took advantage of that for the purposes of this list!

I just love Ron and Herminone. They were the best friends in a book series ever. I agree that Jasper and Alice were way more interesting and loved it when the books delved more into his past. I'm reading All Our Yesterdays now, but am not very far yet. Great list!
ReplyDeleteOoh, let me know what you think of Al Our Yesterdays. I loved it.
DeleteSarah
Gus! Gil! *sobs* Love them both. I always wanted a Gil. I thought Harry Potter would be a hit today :) Great list!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my TTT!
I think we could probably all fill this entire list with characters from Harry Potter, given the chance.
DeleteSarah
Glad to see you featured Jasper on your list. I liked him too :)
ReplyDeleteHe's definitely my favourite Cullen.

I just finished reading All Our Yesterdays and I totally agree - the whole time, I felt conflicted about James because his past and future self were so different yet so alike. And also yes to Jasper! <3
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by my TTT! :D
- Kazhy @ My Library in the Making
I loved James, more than Finn, which is controversial. But I felt I saw all sides of James, and I liked that he was a (deeply) flawed human being.
DeleteSarah
I was deciding whether or not I should put James on my list because he's more like a main character to me. Anyways, nice choice with him! He was definitely one memorable character.
ReplyDeleteLovely list & thanks for stopping by my TTT! (:
I went for a strictly non-protagonist definition when it came to secondary characters for this list!
DeleteSarah
Oh my goodness, what a great list! There are so many characters I love - and a lot I'm not familiar with! Oh Gilbert... he's so dreamy. lol Thanks for sharing your list and also for stopping by my TTT! :)
ReplyDeleteI think Gilbert was one of my first fictional crushes!
DeleteSarah
Hehe, Lula is pretty awesome! I haven't read a Stephanie Plum book in ages though D:
ReplyDeleteThe later ones aren't as good, but Lula's still on top form.
DeleteSarah
James from AOY could definitely have used a bit more back story to show exactly how he got from here to there. He was an interesting character. I can't say I liked him very much, but I had a touch of sympathy for him.
ReplyDeleteStephanie @ Inspiring Insomnia
Surprisingly, I did like James, but I completely see why people didn't. I agree with you in that I would have liked to have seen more of his past.
